Please help us incorporate non-fiction reading into our class in a relevant and interesting way!

I work with at-risk, low-income students.

Although they come from a rough upbringing, I completely admire every single one of them for coming to school with a smile on their face. We have become a family, so when someone is having a bad day, we commit ourselves to making their day a little brighter. As a teacher of this group, my job is not only to expand their brains, but also instill positive social skills, which we have to keep working on every day.

My Project

I plan on using these magazines on a weekly basis to go over each article and discuss not only what the article is talking about, but get into some critical thinking of how each of them feel about the information and how it impacts our lives. Stories around the world may not seem relevant until we really push ourselves to think about how we can relate to them. I want my students to begin to be able to think of how they have an impact on the rest of the world and what they can do to make it better.

My students are not aware of events outside of our community.

I would love to have an age-appropriate set of materials that they can interact with and relate to. I think it's so important to incorporate different styles of texts outside of traditional books and I think magazines are the perfect way!
