This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a second grade, special education bilingual teacher in a high-needs community school in NY.

My obstacle is getting the children interested in reading and keeping their interest. I have found that many of them will begin to read a book, get frustrated by the words or the length of the book, and then stop reading. My students especially have problems with their reading because English is not their native language and many of them are first generation Americans and do not have English speakers at home to help them sound things out and teach them the words in the books.

This past school year (2007-2008), we received a gift subscription to Time for Kids magazine. I noticed that the children were enthusiastic about these magazines and always asked when they could read the next one. This year I would love to get not only the Time for Kids magazine but the Weekly Reader magazine. These scholastic magazines are great because they are short enough to retain their interests (and build up reading stamina), they are colorfully illustrated, and they work with the curriculum for the grades for which they are designed. The children would wind up taking them home and re-reading them to their younger siblings or on their own. Their interests would be sparked and they would ask me for more materials on mummies, or insects, or wildlife... I wound up using these magazines a good deal to supplement the students' social studies, science, and literacy blocks because they are so jam-packed with pertinent information.

Please consider funding this proposal and allowing these children to receive this gift. Your help will make it possible for these students to receive interesting reading materials that they will use and take to heart. You can really help these children develop more of an enthusiasm for reading and help set them on a lifelong path of academic achievement by funding this request. Thank you!
