My Students

Have you ever "read around" a subject? We plan to read around a single subject in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc. as we become better researchers and users of technology. Having resources available to us is of the utmost importance, as we become more aware of the world and our surroundings.

My class consists of thirty gifted and high achieving public school students from an economically disadvantaged neighborhood in a major west coast metropolis.

They all receive free lunch and have limited access to materials and technology. It is our goal to give all students the experiences they need to develop so that they are on an even playing field with peers who have access to the world and to technology. Instilling the habits of daily reading and reading a wide variety of materials is my goal for this request of TIME for Kids Magazines.

My Project

For most of us it is a daily event to read a newspaper or magazine, I want my learners to have that experience so that it becomes a life habit. It is important for children to read a variety of resources when researching and to become familiar with non-fiction magazine articles, I like the TIME for Kids for these reasons. The magazine can help them make connections to current events and help them to broaden their perspectives on real time events. I use the magazines with a group of lessons created for the gifted and talented learner. Using the dimensions of Depth and Complexity the children learn to dig deeper in to the subject matter and to follow their interests independently.

I want to use DonorsChoose carefully because I so appreciate the care and concern of the Donors.

My requests are not frivolous but seriously chosen items that will make an immediate difference for the children in my classroom. There are so many ways these magazines can make a difference in developing critical thinkers and readers.
