Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a loveable, courageous, and diverse bunch! They bring such a variety of amazing experiences, potential, and culture to the classroom. Academically, they are thirsty to learn and absorb as much information as they can in order to prepare themselves for the future. Culturally, they are little ambassadors of the different communities they come from and live in. They joyously bring these experiences to school to share with others. As a teacher, it brings me great pride to teach these children.

I work in a Title I school and have many students in my classroom who are English language learners as well as those with learning disabilities.

Despite this challenge, my students persevere and work hard to accomplish their very best. I am constantly striving to provide my students with multiple avenues in which to reach their goals.

My Project

Transitioning into a new school year, my goal is to have students feeling safe, cared for, organized, and ready to learn. This project will do just that. In order to have a more organized classroom, having a mailbox center will help each student have a designated space to store important papers to take home. This year is especially challenging because we will still be social distancing and classroom supplies and materials will not be shared. I typically have materials within the classroom that students share, especially in our calm down corner. Fidget toys support students' ability to focus and regulate emotions. In order to support the social-emotional needs of my students, I'd like to give each student their own calm down kit to keep on their desk which will include a fidget toy for each child.

Another way I want to support my students this year is by getting them excited about learning about current events.

Oftentimes, students gravitate towards fiction literature, but nonfiction is important too. I want to be able to engage students in a fun way with nonfiction literature. I'd do this by incorporating a weekly routine that gets students excited to read about current events while growing their reading comprehension skills. Having a TIME for Kids magazine subscription will support engaging students in reading nonfiction.
