Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a self-contained 5th Grade class, half of the students being in an ESL class, in a Title I school. Since so many are ESL, I am always searching for great resources to enhance their reading comprehension throughout the curriculum. I have seen other teachers in various grade levels incorporate the "Time for Kids" magazine within their curriculum and have seen the students highly engaged with the stories and the lessons. Teachers have told me what an extremely useful resource this magazine has become. What makes it so great is that the stories are nonfiction and incorporate a variety of subject matters that are often tested, either on the Reading TAKs or the Science TAKs. Secondly, there are higher level comprehension questions and graphic organizers that come with each issue and aids in student comprehension. Also, we only have so many stories and passages to pull from, and teaching from the same ones get boring. This adds a lot of variety for both myself and the students. Finally, this is something these kids can take home to their parents and work on with them. I believe that with my students having their own copies of the "Time for Kids" magazine, they will definitely improve in their fluency, comprehension, and just overall knowledge of their world, which will make them better leaders in their future.
