This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled "This could change your life." ~Helen Exley

The students in my class are creative, imaginative, and unique.

They've come from different countries and cultures, and joined together on the first day of school to create a dynamic classroom environment. They come to school with too much weight on their shoulders, and know way more about the "real world" than they should. Therefore, these students are braver and stronger than most of the adults I know, and have developed coping skills and perspectives beyond their years. They work to overcome the doubt of others and the statistics that predict their failure rather than success, and handle the daily challenges that come with being a third grader. In addition, they want to learn to read great literature, write imaginative tales, solve algebraic expressions, conduct science experiments, and tell the story of our nation's history. They are multifaceted success stories in the making!

My Project

When I picture the classrooms where I grew up, I remember large bookshelves full of books at my fingertips. I could take them home, read them to my family, and keep them in my desk to read at school. In my third year of teaching, my classroom library is not where it needs to be to allow my students to do this. They all have their own book boxes they return to several times a day to read independently, with friends or with younger students. However, with a small supply of books they are unable to take them home for fear that they may not return, and they have read all of the books one or more times. Motivation for reading falls when students think they have been there and read that. Expanding my classroom library will allow students to see that the possibilities are endless when it comes to great literature. They will be able to take books home, read different books every day, improve their reading skills, and enjoy reading even more.

My students are required to complete a daily reading log as part of their homework.

About 4 students return this assignment on a daily basis, and one student has logged the same book every night for the whole year. I want nothing more than to provide books for my class so that they can read every day outside of school in order to improve their reading abilities and become lifelong readers.
