Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What happens when you take 13 of our most at-risk boys into the forest for six days and pledge them into a brotherhood that is focused on high school graduation? The possibilities are endless.

It is no secret that our young men of color are in crisis.

Not only are their high school graduation rates lower than those of their white/Asian counterparts, their dropout and incarceration rates are startlingly high. Young men of color who don't graduate from high school are four times more likely than college graduates to be jobless, 47 times more likely to be incarcerated, and have three times the mortality rate. And while there are numerous uncontrollable factors that affect our boys' lives- factors like race, poverty, and instability- we believe that by shifting our thinking from what our boys cannot do to what are boys can will radically alter how we approach the education of our young men. Our program is designed with that idea in mind- that there is nothing wrong with the boys who are failing, but rather, that our educational system is failing to provide all of the supports that they need in order to thrive. Our program targets 13 young men from 9th - 12th grade.

My Project

Our boys need new uniform ties to highlight their umoja ("unity") brotherhood and their new found status as young leaders at school. During the six days at Boys' Camp, our boys engaged in various leadership workshops, resilience training's, and team-building activities. At the end of the camp, they engaged in a "pledge ceremony" where they pledged to graduate on time from high school and promised to help one another through times of success & times of difficulty. Not only will their new uniform ties distinguish them from the rest of the school community, it will be a visible reminder of their promises to one another during the summer. We will use the ties as an opportunity to reaffirm their summer pledges & remind them how far they have come as young men. They have worked very hard to break old habits and change the usual narrative of young men of color.

Your donations can significantly change the narrative of the young men of color at our school.

We believe that our boys have the potential to be great leaders for both our school community and beyond. By continuing to celebrate their brotherhood and linking them together as a team, they will be able to better support one another during the many inevitable difficult obstacles that they will face as young men growing up. Our young men are stars just waiting to shine.
