My Students

My students are amazing kids who face many challenges both at home and at school. My students all have various disabilities, but they don't let their disabilities hold them back.

All of my students are unique, but one thing is the same in each of them: they love to learn!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and face many challenges before even entering our school. We work together everyday to overcome those challenges and reach new heights. I work with about seventy-five, special education students every week, reaching kids with various disabilities. My students love to move, explore, and play.

My Project

Making friends is such a challenge for many of my students with special needs and so we intentionally work on building friendship skills as much as we can. One of the ways we teach friendship skills is by creating a Peer to Peer program at our school. This program pairs my students with disabilities and children without disabilities and gives them opportunities to practice their friendship skills with fun activities.

One of the fun activities we would like to do this year, is to make tie-dye t-shirts!

Many of my students with disabilities feel left out and like they don't have any friends or a group to belong to when they are at school and making shirts to wear as a group will be a visual reminder of their friendships. It will also show them that they are a welcome and included part of our school community. We will dye our shirts as a group, practicing our sharing skills, our communication skills, and our overall friendship skills. Then, once the t-shirts have been made bright and beautiful, we will iron on our school logo, which will help my students feel like they are members of our school community. This project will allow each child, with special needs and without, to have the chance to make a special, colorful tie dye shirt celebrating friendship and our program.
