My Students

I am fortunate enough to have a job I love! I am a speech therapist in NYC working with a wide range of students. I spend my days traveling around schools in NYC, providing speech and language therapy services to a wide variety of students, who all come from diverse backgrounds. These students all range in their communication abilities. Some are learning to communicate, some are perfecting their communication skills. Although all my students are very different, they have one thing in common, they are all hard workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected my deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students more than most.

The majority of my students live in homes where their parents do not speak the same language as them, American Sign Language. In order to repair communication breakdowns, and to self advocate, my students use lip reading to assist them in communicating in the hearing world. However, with the mask mandate in all NYC public schools, communicating for my students has reached a new level of difficulty.

My Project

Every year, my colleagues and I buy small gifts for our students, and for most this is the only gift they will receive during the holiday season. Since we have been apart so long, and times are especially hard right now, I am planning a team building tie-dye day. Students will work together to create their own shirts, and be able to take them home as their holiday gift. We will get to spend time together where the focus will be on having fun. Additionally, students will be able to practice working in small groups with peers, as well as following multi-step complex directions. At the end of the lesson, they will have a fun shirt that they can take home for the holidays.
