My Students

My school community is very tight-knit, where the students bond over their mutual love of music. Students lug their instruments to and from all of their classes. While they excel in the arts, they struggle in their core academic subjects, specifically in the area of mathematics.

My student population consists of general education and high needs special education students from diverse backgrounds, as well as English language learners.

They come to school from traditionally underserved communities where access to 21st-century technology is limited. Given their lack of resources, engaging in STEM and the Common Core curriculum is severely limited for my students.

My Project

Every student who has ever stepped foot inside a high school math classroom knows about the struggles with the obsolete TI83 calculator. The sepia display is difficult to read, and entering data into the calculator does not parallel what students actually write on their papers. It takes many lessons just for a student to learn how to enter their algebra into the calculator, and more lessons to teach students how to interpret the data. Even with all of those lessons, students with special needs still fall behind.

For the special needs students who struggle to differentiate between sets of data, enter numerous expressions, and focus on vast amounts of information, the backlit color display and more intuitive entry can help level the playing field.

The TI84 CE calculator allows students to enter information more simply and interpret that information more easily . Different functions can be graphed using different colors, allowing students to compare those functions; dashed lines separate each equation entered into the calculator, reducing the overwhelming nature of the numbers on screen; backlit displays allow students with difficulties focusing to focus on the screen where the data are; the ability to edit previous expressions allows students to go back without the risk of retyping information incorrectly; exponents and fractions are displayed accurately, reducing the need for confusing and superfluous parentheses that would never be used when writing expressions by hand; the list goes on.

The TI84 CE calculator would be an invaluable tool for my students, allowing them to more easily overcome their disabilities and engage in the common core algebra curriculum.
