My Students

Our classroom focuses on student-centered learning. While we must adhere to the district's curriculum, I like to provide the students with opportunities to dig deeper into the content through researching aspects that truly interest them.

My students are residents in the inner city.

With all the distractions currently going on in our city, school remains their safe haven for learning and exploration. Our students face a spectrum of adversities but understand that there is a world beyond what some of them are exposed to on a day-to-day basis. They feel safe and secure in our school because as a team we work together to ensure that all of our students are reaping the social and academic benefits of being in the learning environment that we create for them. Regardless of what goes on in the community or the city, we maintain a warm and positive school climate, not just for our students, but for their families as well.

My Project

Having the 2 requested laptops in our language arts classroom readily provides the students with access to resources such as the Internet (using our school's recently added WiFi) and academic databases for research without the difficulty having to book time in our computer lab. While some projects that we complete do require extensive research which requires the entire class to have access to the internet, there are many times in daily instruction where the students could benefit from conducting their own quick research as it relates to the content. When students inquire about a specific component of the lesson or an assigned text, I usually do research on my laptop for the students to build further knowledge. If the students had access to laptops and Internet in the classroom, this would further their independent learning as well as increase their practice with accountability as responsible learners.

Donations to this project would make such an impact on my students' development as responsible learners.

Many of my students do not have access to devices such as laptops. Not only would this give them an experience and opportunity to have access to technology on a daily basis, but it would increase their abilities to continue taking charge of their learning and knowledge base. I want my students to be just as exposed to technology as are many others students across the nation.
