Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is amazing how technology has infused itself into our everyday lives, including our classrooms. Although I make use of manipulatives when covering a math lesson, one of the greatest challenges I'm facing is being able to communicate mathematics to my students using more of a hands-on approach.

Even though the students as a whole in my school come from varied backgrounds, the students in my classroom come from a financially challenged home life where technology is non-existent.

When they come in the mornings, the first thing they want to do is go on the computers. The sounds, colors, and activities they are exposed to on an almost daily basis not only engages and teaches them, but they have fun while learning. Even though most of my students do not have use of technology outside of the classroom setting, I feel very lucky to be able to provide them with computers while they're in school. Since a great majority of my students are visual learners, the only missing piece I believe exists is on my part as their teacher, and being able to transmit the information in a clearer more precise manner.

My Project

I have seen friends of mine using the Document Viewer in their classrooms and have witnessed first-hand the difference it can make. Although I know I can make use of the Document Viewer in any of the subjects I teach, I am focusing on mathematics simply because it will facilitate not only my teaching, but their learning. An example that comes to mind is adding or subtracting with re-grouping. Since I do not have enough manipulatives for all of my students to be able to do their problems, I have always taught this through my own drawings on a board. Not only is this very time consuming, but I don't always succeed in getting the point across or the results I want. With the Document Viewer I can actually assemble a set of base-ten blocks and show my students exactly how to re-group numbers from ones to tens, tens to hundreds, etc. The actual visualization and understanding of this process can make a true difference in a child.

Being able to use a Document Viewer in the classroom will definitely change my students' lives for the better.

When a child learns something new, and in turn feels successful, the sky's the limit. There's no telling what he or she can do. I believe that interactive teaching and learning is the way of the future. Every child has the potential to learn, regardless of background or financial situation. The Document Viewer will allow me to expose my students to a brand new world.
