My Students

I have only known my students since last week, but they are already showing me that they are pretty amazing. Despite a last minute change which led us to start the year remote, they all came in with a positive attitude, ready to work. I know many of them are managing their own academics, with many having both parents working, which is why I am so impressed that they are showing up to our Zoom meetings on time and ready to go!

Despite the challenges that remote learning has brought, as this new year begins, I am blown away by their perseverance and optimistic nature.

We have had tech issues, scheduling issues, and constant last minute changes from our district. They have handled all of it with patience and grace. Despite their young age they are handling uncertainty better than many adults!

My Project

My students are currently spending at least a portion of their time working remotely. When we assign math, it is essential for fifth graders to be able to draw models and do computations to work out problems. Right now, there is no good way for them to do that on their laptops.

Presently, both of their current options for sharing math are completely awful!

They either do their math computations on paper and send me a picture, or try to do their math on their laptop trackpad. With the paper option, many times the pictures I get are blurry or incomplete. They are also incredibly hard for me to annotate in any meaningful way. Using the laptop trackpad allows the work to be digital, but is incredibly frustrating for students and often illegible for me. I fear that if they don't have a more user friendly way to do their math, it may inhibit their ability to learn the content or turn them off of the subject completely. I am hopeful that if I get these portable touchpads with stylus pens, they can easily do their math and share it online.
