My Students

The responsibility of a journalist, a photographer, and a yearbook is to capture what is seen and heard, what is silent and undiscovered, and to show the world in a way that those who look at it will be brought back to that moment and experience the visceral reality of what happened.

Our award winning Yearbook staff is filled with our school's best and brightest students who selflessly and passionately develop our book for the school and community.

The staff of 24 students has been selected through an application and interview process to take the yearbook class and learn about the nuances and impact that effective journalism have on a student body and community. Along with all of their other classes, these students are leaders in numerous extra-curricular activities and student groups. They have taken on the powerful responsibility of capturing the essence of a year and sharing our school's story in the book. Our staff is easily one of the most engaging groups in the school; they never shy away from the opportunity to get the right pictures, ask the interesting questions, or just being plain silly and comfortable with themselves. This is truly the best group of students that a teacher can ask to work with because of the selfless dedication and charm.

My Project

Although our book has been recognized at the national level for our quality of work, we are in need of newer resources that will help our staff develop their skills and bring a product to our community that is of the highest quality. It has been four years since we have been able to afford new photography equipment. We are seeking a camera and lens that will allow my photographers to learn new photography skills that bring them to the same level as professional photographers. Our staff loves to get up close and personal with the subjects that they are shooting, and the higher quality and newer camera will allow them to be more versatile in their shooting. It is the goal of many of my photographers to have their work submitted to local and national competitions to not just put their work in the spotlight, but to also bring greater recognition to our yearbook and our school community. With this camera we can take higher quality portrait photos along with professional quality action shots

As a result of this project, the quality of the product for our school community will be improved infinitely.

Students will take greater pride in the work that they complete and we will teach students post-graduate photography skills that may lead them into a newfound profession. One of the greatest things that photography can do is teach a person to change the way they look at something. The ability to be versatile, unique, and comfortable with ones self are essential to future success.
