My Students

I teach a Kindergarten/1st grade split class. My students are severely intellectually delayed. Many of my students are non-verbal or can say a few words when prompted. Not only do our students focus on daily living skills, but they also have goals for speech, physical and occupational therapy.

My class focuses heavily on teaching my students the basics.

We focus on the alphabet, numbers 1-10, colors, days of the week and learning the names of the teachers, assistants, and students. I also rely greatly on music as a form of repetitive, yet fun communication. The students tend to have a short attention span so a variety of innovative approaches are vital for my children to thrive both academically and socially.

My Project

My dream this year would be to have a Binding Machine, binding spines and an IPad. By having a binding machine and spines I can create and design communication books individualized to each student’s skill level. For those students capable of verbal prompting I can print out pictures of letters, numbers, pictures of teachers and students, etc. These books can be used to aid the students in making choices and double as a form of Occupational Therapy. The books may also be sent home with the student for reinforcement or to help the parents communicate more efficiently with their child. The IPad can be used with all the students to help them have a voice. I can use them in conjunction with our communication books. The IPad has a number of applications to reinforce the skills practiced in class. I can verbally teach the alphabet or teach the students how to write letters with the easy touch screen on the IPad. The hands on, interactive approach is a magnetic learning tool.

IPads are a fun way to play and learn at the same time. The binding machine and IPad will offer my students the chance to excel through books and technology. It will help to enhance the needs of each student, so they are ready to progress to the next grade level.
