This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our music room is a safe and fun place where my students make music together. They walk into the room, I grab my ukulele, and we sing hello to each other. Despite challenges they might have, I want my students to find comfort in music.

I teach every class in our school from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.

Many of my students come from a Hispanic background. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.

Our school maintains relatively small class sizes, and that enables teachers to give more tailored instruction, but this is a factor which contributes to a tight budget. In addition, a lot of students come from low-income families. Nevertheless, I am determined to do my best not to let those factors stand in the way of my students getting the resources they deserve. I hope to provide them with the right tools and opportunities through the support here at DonorsChoose.org.

My Project

As a teacher who loves to incorporate today's technology into my classroom, I constantly think about ways to improve my lessons, and therefore my students' learning experience.

The three items that I am requesting for this project are: an Apple TV, a high-quality presentation remote, and an external a CD/DVD drive.

Through the AirPlay feature from an Apple TV, I will be able to mirror the screen of my iPad, which I use daily, onto the big screen so that my students can look at whatever I want to share from my iPad with a breeze. The best part of using AirPlay is that it is WIRE-FREE! I will be able to walk around as I use my iPad, which will certainly increase the level of engagement. I researched this topic for a while, and I am confident that AirPlay is currently the best option for a wire-free display in my classroom.

In addition to an Apple TV, I am also requesting an advanced presentation remote called Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote. Since I recently started putting some of the lesson materials in Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint, this little smart remote will, once again, free me to walk around the classroom and help my students stay engaged. This remote can also function as digital pointer, volume controller, and timer, on top of the typical presentation remote which navigates slides. The last item requested for this project is an external CD/DVD drive, which I need since my work computer does not have one built in.
