My Students

Can you imagine being a teacher and running out of classroom library books for students to use? The look on their faces when you tell them that they are unable to read the book of their choice? Well, if you're like me, you never want to experience that situation!

I underestimated the number of incoming 6th graders this school year.

I also underestimated the number of enthusiastic readers that I would have so early into the school year! Located in the Nation's Capital, my students have a strong desire to read but are limited to their resources. With one of our school Core Values being "resilience", they are proving to persevere through unimaginable challenges. Unable to have access to books and magazines at home, I want to provide a classroom library system to continue in their pursuits of reading! To make it more diverse, I want to include books on different reading levels as well as magazine subscriptions covering national topics.

My Project

My students are interested in all genres of reading. To continue their interests, I want to add to existing collections that are in the classroom as well as encourage them to read about national topics. The benefits of reading inside and outside of the classroom are endless. With a classroom library, students are able to take their materials from the classroom and share them with family and friends outside of school. Time for Kids magazine will provide consistency with informing my students of current events in a language that they will understand. They will be able to complete activities and engage in discussion over topics ranging from politics, to sports and education. The Hunger Games trilogy is still a class favorite and now that we have established a check out system, we can't seem to keep enough copies on the shelf. The same could also be said with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. My female students are especially in love with The Skin I'm In!

Providing students with reading material that they are able to access really helps with building literacy skills.

When students have the desire to read, all that is needed are more resources to keep up the momentum! With your assistance, my students can have a range of materials based on their reading levels to read in class and at home with their families!
