My Project

Who my students are in the world and the richness of their cultural heritage is something I strive to give them. They face challenges but single parents, grandparents, and older siblings do their very best to instill a better way of living for their families.

“Threads of Me: Kente for Show and Tell” is a book rich in culture about a child their age who demonstrates pride in her ancestry and I would like each child to have a copy to share with their families.

Most of my students live in Public Housing where having books is not a priority when money for food, clothing and utilities may be lacking. Learning to read and sharing that reading while strengthening family bonds is the goal of this project. Exposure to books contributes to an understanding of print concepts (ex.left to right, top to bottom, sequencing) Listening to stories assists in the development of literacy skills and language development, which benefits all children. These books will go home with students and stay there. When parents have books to read to their children it promotes a time for quiet and calmness in their hectic lives. Picture books help readers to develop an appreciation of art and writing, and introduce children to information about a larger world. These books will stay in the house and therefore they will also influence younger siblings and family members. They will teach more than one family member to love to read.

The book is an amazing introduction to a new culture, which stirs up a loving for reading, but also a curiosity about the world. I would really like to help my Pre-K students get ready for kindergarten which is just six months away from now.
