Thoughts About Living a Compassionate Life

My students need books so they can take ownership of their education and take knowledge with them even when school ends.

My Students

My students are an incredibly diverse and vibrant group of young people and they hail from all the boroughs of NYC. Some of them face harsh realities and I often find myself inspired by their resilience. I genuinely feel it's a privilege to guide them through improving their and through some of the non-academic obstacles they face. Plus, I don't do it alone.

Many of my students show such considerable compassion for one another.

They are by no means perfect, no one is, but what continues to impress me is how they strive to be better each and every day.

It's true that some of them just haven't totally figured out how to do that yet. Nonetheless, that desire, that fire, is there. With a little guidance, who they burgeon into is a story yet to be grown.

My Project

Each student will be given their own book, which will transform their experience of reading. Owning your own book instead of having a rental is a game changer because my students will be able to paint their personalities into the text, merging their consciousness with that of the author, creating a wholly new text that unique to them.

The book has a dual purpose: First, each page houses its own sentence so students will be able to dig in and perform close readings of complex and compound sentence, which will help immensely in their understanding of grammar and syntax; second, themes of subjectivity and the real-life values of humility and empathy pervade the book throughout the book.

The other benefit of the having one sentence per page is that there is a ton of room for kids to annotate and make their mark in the book.

The content is anecdotal, accessible, and has the capacity to change their view of humans and how they fit into the world. Because the book is so engaging and "real", my students will have a reason to dig into the book and struggle with some of the limited, but challenging, language.
