My Students

My 10th grade English II students are nothing short of incredible.

They are inquisitive, empathetic, albeit outlandish at times, but sweet.

The one thing I find the most incredible about them, is that they trust me when I recommend a book. Most of them do not read outside of school required material, and Netflix is easier anyway. But when I get new novels from second hand stores, garage sales, or bring in some from my own personal library, even though boys beginning reading the back cover and look at me with the most sincere, determined stare and say, "I'll try this one."

In an effort to boost their reading levels, and encourage them to put the TV remote or smartphone down, I have challenged my students this year with an Independent Reading Challenge of two books of their choice per quarter. They were so relieved when I told them they were able to pick the book themselves and that has spurred me on to getting them anything (and everything) they want to get their hands on.

My Project

Nothing makes me happier than when I can have a conversation with one of my students about a book he or she borrowed from me- and truly enjoyed! Even better is when former students come back to see me because they know I have "the best books". In a time when our students are glued to social media and online gaming, we are tasked with teaching them to put the technology down and expand their minds other ways. Sometimes Google won't be able to help you, but the knowledge that you've gained from exposing yourself to different literature and different genres can. It's time our students get their imagination and inquisitive minds back.
