This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a diverse urban neighborhood where our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch. We have a high percentage of students (nearly 2/3 of the student population) who speak a primary language other than English at home.

Our students come to school ready and eager to learn and apply what they have learned to real-world problems while utilizing an array of inquiry, fine arts, media, technology, and content.

My Project

As we dive into our new STEAM project for this year, my students need to be able to connect what they have learned about characterization and body language with the avatars they are creating to represent each classroom. The challenge will be for them to use all of their observation and creative skills to first observe one of our 29 homerooms and then to create an avatar that represents the personality of that class.

In order to bring their work to life, students need to sew and physically construct 3-D avatars of the classroom they have observed.

The Brother Sewing/Embroidery machine will allow them to create these avatars to scale, using art to help them visualize the characters they are creating. They will then use their avatars to create stop-action films teaching character education stories they have written to be shown to all the classrooms in the school.
