A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students live in the middle of the city, in an industrial district. Our high poverty, Title I school is hidden behind many manufacturing buildings and has very few places for the students to run and play. 100% of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
Despite all these challenges, my students come to school with a thirst for knowledge.
They are willing to work hard and are all so excited to be a part of a classroom community. Even without having pre-school experience, many students catch on and learn so easily.
My Project
Since February is National Dental Awareness Month, we will be learning how to properly take care of our teeth. Many of my students come into class each day, not having their teeth brushed. As a teacher, I know the importance of students needing hygiene routines. Five and six-year-olds are very honest, and will tell each other if they smell bad or have bad breath. I don't want any of my students coming in feeling bad or embarrassed.
By having these dental hygiene tools in the classroom, my students can know how important it is for them to take care of themselves.
For some students, this will be their first time having access to their own toothbrush and toothpaste. For others, it will be the only time of day that they are able to brush. Because it will be a "gift" from me, they will be excited to use it and share what they've learned with their families.
