Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love working together. As a reading teacher I encourage collaboration as a proven strategy to increase reading comprehension and fluency. This means we read in small groups together, ask and answer questions, study vocabulary, and write summaries to increase comprehension and fluency. For the past 2 years, we have wrestled with awkwardly pushing desks ( the heavy ones with the chair and desk attached) together to form small group tables. This process of moving students and desks around to form these groups can be tedious and disruptive and takes away from valuable learning time. This reading class is vital as most of my students come from low-income households which unfortunately has resulted in low reading ability, low self-confidence, and low academic achievement.
The chairs and tables I'm asking for would be absolutely invaluable in creating a comfortable and flexible working environment that would facilitate group reading and collaboration.
This collaborative approach has been proven to increase student engagement in reading and increased achievement across all subjects. I take pride in seeing the joy on my students faces when we celebrate their improved reading test scores. Nothing is better than seeing these hard-working student's self-esteem grow as their reading ability increases and their understanding grows.
Making sure students are comfortable is also an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my student's work when they have chances to work together as they tend to make better choices, are more engaged, and get more work completed. The more flexible seating arrangement provided by these chairs and tables will give my students a chance to make more effective learning choices.
I have seen how collaboration can positively affect my students' reading ability, self-esteem, and ability to achieve. These table sand chairs will help us grow even more!
