My Students

Remember how much fun it was when you got a brand new book that you just couldn't wait to crack open? Now remember how much fun art projects were in school. Wouldn't it be great to put them together?!

I have a class of 23 incredibly active 6th graders!

These kids keep me on my toes and can be a lot of fun. I have 9 boys and 14 girls in my class and teach in a low income school district. Many of the families in our school don't have extra money to spend on books for their kids or art supplies to foster creativity in their kids.

My Project

I first purchased a copy of this book for myself on a whim and quickly realized how the simple activities were inspiring me to create different types of art that I'd never considered before. Many of my students think of stuffy still life paintings of fruit when they hear the word "art" and I want to help change that! I want to have students who are willing and eager to "think outside of the box" and channel their creativity. This book has a different activity on each page that helps develop that creativity. Some activities are simple, like drawing different lines of varying thickness; others are more involved, like carrying the book with them everywhere they go. I would love to take my class to an art museum for a day so they could explore all of the amazing types of art that are out there, but we don't have any art museums in our area. I want my class to realize that they too can be artists--and they can use everyday objects to do it

We so frequently tell our students, "Don't write in that book!" Wouldn't it be refreshing to say, "Hmmmm, I think that your book is too empty-keep drawing in it!" I would love to be able to give my kids this book and inspire them to pursue other artistic avenues throughout their lives.
