Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what you look like? Can you draw yourself as lifelike as possible? That is what I hope my students will learn to do...

The students at my school are extremely lucky to have a great art program.

We are a small school of about 500 kids who get art each of their 3 years. Beginning in 6th grade and moving on to 7th grade the students receive Visual Art at least 2 times per week, usually 3. In the 8th Grade they move on to the computer lab to work on design, journalism, and graphics programs. The students, many with limited English, skills thrive in this arts heavy curriculum. Our arts-heavy curriculum is partly in response to the fact that most of my students are recent immigrants living in a neighborhood that is becoming more difficult for their families to afford as "The Artists" move in and push them out. We want the students to embrace the arts, not fear them.

My Project

Observation is an important skill for every student to learn; whether they are describing the results of a science experiment, writing about the traits of a character in the book they are reading in their English class, or drawing the trees outside their classroom. In the art room we can really work on the students observational skills. Not every student is going to be a great artist, but attention to detail will help them to notice things that will improve their comprehension of the world around them in all their subjects. I think is it very important, especially for 6th graders, to develop a healthy view of themselves. We all have a mental picture in our head of what we think we look like. We recall details of our faces that may or may not be what is really there. By giving the students Self-Portrait Mirrors to really see themselves up close I am hoping that they can learn more about themselves.

Like most middle school aged students, my 6th grade budding artists are still dealing with the huge transition from elementary school.

These mirrors will allow them to really see themselves for who they are and capture the true "PERSON" they see before them.
