Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 6th grade teacher teaching in an elementary setting in east San Jose. This setting means I teach all subjects and this gives me the opportunity to integrate consistent themes across the curriculum. These themes enable a higher level of interest and "buy-in" by my students during the year. My classroom, like many other classrooms, consists of students of color (mainly Hispanic) coming from disadvantage backgrounds. There is a cultural disconnect between these students' life experiences and the required reading as it is presented in the school texts. However, II teach fifth grade at a Los Angeles Title One public school. Over the years I have created many handouts and special technology-based projects for my students to use. I even have created handouts for parents so they can help their child with fifth grade math homework. By acquiring The Circuit I will be able to engage the students in a common text that can serve as a mentor text, or model, for "good writing." In addition to the writing skills and automatic modeling, a high interest text such as this will easily provide a place for student to use "good reader" techniques such as making connections. For these things to occur it is necessary for my students to have access to the essential materials: 33 copies of the novel, The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez. As a 6th grade teacher, I feel that reading and writing are sometimes in competition with so many other outside interest such as TV and video games. It is essential to hook students with interesting and relatable texts. This novel is well written and alludes to many experiences my students have. This is the novel to draw my student in and create life long readers and writers and it can be you that assists in this endeavor and makes it a success!
