My Students

Its hard to learn in a classroom where materials are hard to find and used beyond usefulness. This is what my classroom is becoming. Can you imagine the disappointment when students are excited about learning and they see the classroom is a mess?

My students range in age from kindergarten to fifth grade.

We are a title one school, meaning there are enough students who receive free or reduced lunches through federal programs. We have over ninety percent of our school population in this program. Most of our students come from single parent households. Many are students who come to school from daycare and return to daycare when the school day is over. Some are military dependents with parents deployed overseas. Our teachers work extremely hard to provide these students with a quality and meaningful learning experience, but often music is left behind. We were also informed as a faculty that our operating budged for the first semester is only $5000. That means no supplies will be purchased.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students by giving them an organized place to do their learning. We have costumes and instruments stored in cardboard boxes that are falling apart. For those, I am asking for 10-15 matching plastic storage boxes with lids. I am also requesting basic supplies such as crayons, pencils, erasers, dry erase pens and response boards for students to use. Basic school supplies are an essential in my classroom. I teach music, but with it comes the responsibility of crossing the boundaries of curriculum. To meet many of our music standards, we listen to music and integrate handwriting practice, language arts and reading. In practicing rhythm, we use color coding, graphing and writing. For these purposes, I am requesting 32 page Blue Books to use as student journals.

This request is an opportunity for me to be able to connect music with the core curriculum in my school and an opportunity to organize things for my students, giving them a safer classroom to learn within.

Giving my students the opportunity to write about different styles of music we listen to in class will give them an experience they can look back upon later in life and recall the importance of Mozart or Bach.
