Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are witty, clever, and they each have a great sense of humor. They each have unique personalities and learning styles, with their needs differing greatly.

They are the epitome of resilience, persevering despite the many difficulties they face some faculty and staff have not experienced during their longer lifespans; working closely with them each day is inspiring.

Teaching students with disabilities means I must utilize my creativity, which is what initially brought me to this platform. My students encourage me in ways they may not be aware of, I am constantly in search of opportunities and resources so I am able to give them what they are so deserving of: a quality and engaging educational experience.

My Project

High School reading selections don't typically reflect the vast changes our society has experienced in the recent past. From the Land rights of Indigenous People, to the Black Lives Matter movement, to immigration rights to LGBTQ+ rights, and on to the Me Too movement; technology has made it possible for people to create community with others of similar identities and experiences to express ideas for change through social activism.

It is my aim the funding of this project introduces the work of authors who represent all genders and non-binary, racial, and religious identities to my students.

As high school teachers, we prepare our students to go out into the world and make their mark. I cannot think of a better way to show them how they could build what's important to them as a platform by introducing literature to choose for their independent reading.

Including writing styles such as poetry and hip-hop music, and covering topics such as stories from a former child soldier in Sierra Leone, a young Pakistani woman who finds her views on arranged marriage when her paramour is to be betrothed to a relative; American accounts of life as an undocumented citizen, and life as a transgender teen. We are able to hear firsthand accounts of experiences fellow global citizens have that vary from that of our own.

With a mix of classics by renown authors and critically acclaimed books that have recently been (and are soon to come) to both the big screen and the silver sceen, my students are sure to find their new favorite book on our shelves.
