Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade bilingual school teacher at Audubon School P.S. 128 in Manhattan. Our school has many successful ongoing projects, with the involvement of many eager students. We have many activities such as Buddy Reading, Writers Workshop, Math Workshop and Talent shows.
Yet, there is one thing in which we need help. It's pretty major and it affects the students drastically, impacting on their health and energy levels, and negatively affecting their willingness to learn, their attention to teachers, and their ability to focus in the classroom.
I am talking about the heat. The temperature is rising and our classroom has no air conditioning. I have three students who suffer from asthma and one who has a very bad case of psoriasis (the heat irritates her skin and she always has to cover her arms and neck). When my students suffer from asthma attacks it is very frightening for all of us to see them struggling to breathe.
We need a portable air conditioner. A portable air conditioner can bring the students comfort, so they would be less distracted by heat and the extreme New York City humidity. They will be able to breathe comfortably and focus on their lessons.
