My Students

It is unbelievable that people in charge of education believe that all students should be able to do the same things at the same age no matter where they live and their family background. I do everything I can to level the playing field for my inner city students.

My Sensational Second Grade students are predominantly from inner city Los Angeles, low income and limited English speaking homes.

I try to give them as much standard English vocabulary and grammar practice as possible in the hours that I have them in my class.

My Project

There is much focus on testing in our educational system these days. Although I am mandated to provide these not always meaningful assessments, in my heart I want my students to know that learning includes more than endless bubble filling and paperwork. I struggle to teach my students to have a love of learning and to have motivation to learn as much as they can. So much of what we do on a daily basis is not developmentally appropriate for their age and I try hard to make them enjoy learning and give them a desire to do well. Therefore, I am asking for puzzles and games to help them enjoy learning about where to break words into syllables, changing nouns from singular into plural, finding equivalencies in addition and counting money, and much more!

As someone with a Bachelor's in Child Development many of the standards I am required to teach my 2nd grade students are completely the opposite of developmentally appropriate.

My six, seven, and eight year old students need more concrete ways to learn and the hands on puzzles and games I am requesting will help me deliver this necessary way to make their learning enjoyable.
