My Students

In a world where technology is everywhere, it is hard to believe not all students have access to computers. Unfortunately this is the case for many of my third grade students. My students need to be able to learn how to use computers to keep up in this fast paced world.

My students are eight and nine years old, many are ESL and come from lower income families.

Sadly not all my parents can afford to have a computer in their homes. Even sadder is the fact that my school can only afford one technology teacher and therefore third grade students do not get to go to the computer lab. I have one computer in the room, which is not enough for 25 students. My students want to explore games, learning websites, or even just publish their work. At time it becomes difficult for them all to get their chance.

My Project

While one laptop may not seem like much, in my classroom it would be an opportunity. It would become a resource for research, a place to work of educational games to improve language, reading , math, and writing. More importantly it would allow children who may not have access to computers daily more opportunities to become familiar with a tool that will be a part of their adult lives. My students will become more comfortable and familiar with how a computer works and how it can help them.

You can help bridge a gap between lower income students and others who have more, so access to such things are not even thought about.

Many kids are brought up around such technology that they have begun to surpass many adults. Now imagine being a child who has limited to no access, how could you compete?
