My Students

Based on the 18 years that I have been teaching, I can say that science is the subject that most consistently really piques the interest of my students. I am requesting a collection of math and science books that align to the current standards because it will be an invaluable tool in pushing students to new heights in reading.

My students are beautiful third graders who need a variety of books to read!

They are children who live in a state where education is woefully underfunded. Nevada spends less per pupil than almost every other state in America. My students are suffering from a lack of materials that meet the standards that teachers are required to teach. My students love to read and have very diverse interests.

My Project

My students will use these books to read as part of independent reading time. They will be provided "book boxes" which will be filled up with books that they choose, as well as books that are part of an individualized reading instructional program. As the teacher is meeting with small groups of children, the other children are using that time to improve their reading levels through carefully structured independent reading time. Giving students a large selection of materials is imperative to this individualized program because students have to take control and find books that genuinely interest them. Research shows that students reading for long periods of time each day will improve students' reading levels significantly over a school year. Combining independent reading with carefully planned explicit instruction is the key to helping students learn to love books and to be successful readers who turn to books just for fun.

The variety of books that are in this third grade collection are designed to meet the rigor of the newer standards that were implemented in 2010.

There is a wide variety of books to interest all students. Topics range from outer space and astronomy to historical leaders past and present and pioneers of science such as Jane Goodall and Mohandas Gandhi. Putting these books in the hands of my students will give them the tools they need to be successful readers who love books.
