Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I now teach third-graders at a Headstart through 5th-grade school in North Miami Beach. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited resources at home. My students are always excited to use technology in the classroom and when we do center activities, they rush for the workstations to explore online resources. For most of our students, Internet access and the use of computers are a luxury that they do not have at home.

Most of my students face the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.

Most do not have computer access at home. We are officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, therefore technology has now infiltrated every aspect of how our classes are taught. Unfortunately, most of our students start the school year with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they need to be successful.

My Project

With this financial literacy kit that is specifically designed for younger students, my 3rd-grade students will be given a budget to make economic choices in a classroom store by purchasing snacks using coins and bills. After making their purchases, they will identify the opportunity cost of their economic choice. This introduces students to the budgeting and cost-benefit analyses aspects of personal finance.

Using a gradual release of responsibility model, it is hoped that my third-grade students will experience a real-life example of an economic decision-making process.

This cross-curricular lesson uses math and social studies to introduce students to the basics of personal finance. Students needed to make an economic choice by selecting items to purchase and additionally, students will grapple with the opportunity cost of their economic choice.

Ultimately, students should conclude that personal finance involves understanding that the limits of one’s budget dictate one’s economic opportunities. Your donations will help me teach my students financial literacy through hands-on learning.
