My Students

My classroom is full of curious readers, authors, scientists and mathematicians. My students attend a Title I school in Oakland, California with a school-wide, free breakfast and lunch program. Many of my students come from families and communities that have experienced some form of trauma and often have difficulty coming to school. Our school has an increasing amount of newcomer families which continue to make our school an amazing and diverse community where all are welcome.

My students are survivors and thinkers, who push through these tribulations to question, dream and inspire.

Together, we show up and work hard each and every day to grow as life-long learners and critical thinkers.

My Project

Last year I implemented morning STEM bins, with the help and support of DonorsChoose. My students have been loving it and I have noticed a definite improvement in their attendance, ability to support one another, and their creative problem solving skills. One of my goals for this project is to refresh the materials in the morning bins. A lot of the cups were cracked during a tower building contest, and some of the LEGO bricks were lost in epic LEGO fortress challenges. Adding new materials will bring a refreshed excitement in the morning, and help to keep my students engaged and coming to school on time! The second component of this project is building my library of folktales. In my opinion, one of the best units in third grade reading, is the fairy tale and folk tale unit! I have plenty of fairy tales, but am in need of some folk tales to balance out the unit. I am hoping to begin my collection with some of the students' favorite stories featuring Anansi the Spider, Brer Rabbit, and the Monkey King. The last goal of this project is to refresh our supplies. We use our whiteboard clipboards, another DonorsChoose funded supply, every day, which means we are also using dry-erase markers every day. Over time our supply of markers has dwindled. The students would be thrilled to see a new batch of whiteboard markers!

I am so excited to see the learning and joy that comes from this project, and thank you all in advance for supporting my classroom.
