Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach music to about 400 first through fifth graders in a Hispanic and African-American dominated urban school. Music is not considered to be part of the core curriculum, so I am not given an annual budget to spend on my classroom. As a result, we are missing many classroom items that other districts take for granted. I teach music in a very small room that has no storage space. I use a variety of tools in my classroom to help make music fun and educational. Over the years I have personally purchased musical instruments, puppets, masks, art supplies, rubber balls, gauze scarves, and countless manipulatives. All of these materials are currently crammed into the space beneath my desk, so as not to occupy the limited floor space, but it is very hard to find things in this "system". I only see my students for thirty minutes a week, and can't afford to waste their music time searching for materials. That is why I am requesting twenty clear plastic storage bins in four different sizes. I will be able to organize our music supplies by category and stack the bins neatly. The clear plastic will allow me to know the contents immediately. This is not a glamorous sounding request, but I believe that having a clear organizational system is important to my students. It will allow us to find our materials quickly, giving the students more instructional time. Being able to locate objects for themselves will give students some independence. Students will also be able to clean up after themselves, which will give them a sense of pride and civic duty. By forming a clear organizational system for my classroom, students will spend the time that they currently waste digging for supplies experiencing music instead. Your help will make it possible for students to have a fuller, more rewarding music education.
