My Project

The school where I currently teach is an inclusive school that serves a variety of students from different socio-economic backgrounds. The majority of students at this school are students of color. For reasons unknown, they entered my Geometry classrooms with a learning philosophy of solving the problem (right or wrong) by themselves and refusing to collaborate with or explain their mathematical thinking to their classroom peers. Even though we know that learning and learning mathematics in particular is social or a collaborative endeavor that usually involves communication. No one learns in isolation.

My students are coming on slowly to collaborate with one another and to explain their mathematical thinking.

They are currently not at the level I expected them to be due to the lack of displayed collaborative large boards such as the large mobile magnetic white boards I am currently requesting. I want to use the white boards to engage the students with one another in mathematical speed dating and think- pair-share mathematics activities in the classroom. I expected students to think through the assigned mathematic tasks first individually, then pair up and compare answers and correct misconceptions, explain their approaches to solving mathematics problems to their peers and the whole class. I also expected the students to actively participate in all collaborative class activities by standing up and walking around the classroom while still doing mathematics. This could also attend to the kinetic learning needs of the students.
