Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in the Hearing Education Services program in self-contained classrooms that try to meet their academic, social-emotional, and physical needs. My students travel from different parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island all the way to the South Shore of Staten island to be provided with all the services they require.

My middle schoolers are typical "coming of age", Deaf and Hard of hearing teenagers who are getting through their lives as any teenager would be, with humor, curiosity and a little mischief to lighten the mood.

I have such the pleasure of working with them and using American Sign Language (ASL), their preferred method of communication which is a beautiful, visual language.

Although they may be challenged with adversities, these Deaf or Hard of Hearing students are eager, willing, and curious learners. They are trying to navigate a hearing world to find or grow into their identities as young men and woman. So many Deaf and Hard of Hearing students struggle with reading comprehension and English language acquisition which differs greatly from ASL. However, my students plow on through and are committed to their own personal and academic growth.

My Project

The middle school curriculum includes the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Because my students are Deaf/ Hard of Hearing (DHH), they require scaffolds, visuals, and direct instruction to increase reading comprehension and language development. Hence, the Lightning Thief Graphic Novel will be provided to the students who are approaching reading level so that they can continue to feel included in the classroom discussions regarding the text. The other books will be used to build background knowledge of the historical implications in the Lightning Thief which discuss Ancient Greek culture, traditions, and religion.

These books will provide my students with enrichment and information that they can build on.

Stunning pictures and visuals in the books I chose will enhance student engagement and motivate independent learning through access of the materials. I hope to build a love of learning about literacy and history while being cognizant of their uniqueness and individuality as learners.

These books will offer my students the opportunity to cure their curiosity with diverse books and materials that will support their individual and unique learning styles. Their success will be guaranteed through the accessibility and availability of materials. This will encourage and motivate my students to enrich their understanding of the literature. As they go along reading the Lightning Thief, they can hone in on historical information by going to the nonfiction books and reading more about Greek Mythology, or Greek Culture enriching their individual apprehension of the text.

Accessibility is crucial to individual motivation, engagement, and achievement. With these books, my students will have the opportunity to dig deeper into literature and engage with history because they will have access to a multitude of intriguing, reading materials.
