Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.

Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.

My Project

Our speech teamwork with special needs students, many with sensory issues, and medical conditions. When we physically return to school, our students will not be wearing masks. We cannot wear a mask under a standard face shield for several professional ethical reasons.

Our students must see our mouths during speech therapy.

The students we work with need to see our mouths for articulation, to model oral motor movements, to hear what we say clearly without being muffled, and to comprehend what we are saying. Visually seeing someone speak aids in comprehension in what is being said. Our students already have challenges with their communication skills.

We need to be able to give our students the best therapy possible, as well as, protect them and ourselves. We all need to be protected from COVID droplets at the same time. The current "window" masks are not adequate. The stitching in some has been found to still allow particles through. Plastic masks are difficult to breathe in or have the ineffectual valves. Better see-through masks are in development and expected months after school starts. These special shields provide a "drop cloth" of sorts that provides a droplet barrier. Our students will be able to see our mouths and be protected from our droplets.
