This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the excitement you felt as the start of school drew near? There were friends and activities you would never tire of sharing. For our school and students Floor Hockey is just such an activity.

Our students are great kids who dream big and attend a culturally diverse urban public school.

We share a complex with another elementary school that mirrors our student population, in total about 2000 students. 98% of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches. Despite sweeping budget cuts and larger student numbers our school emphasizes personal fitness as a way to support learning. We have recess on a daily basis for students in Grades 4 -5 and for the younger grades on a rotating weekly basis. All of our students have an opportunity to participate in lunch clubs some of which give them an additional opportunity for supervised physical activity.

My Project

Imagine standing in the net at MSG and deflecting the puck to save the game for your team? I am sure that this is what runs through the minds of our students when we play Floor Hockey. We play Floor Hockey a lot. The children ask for it during our Morning Program before school. They ask for it during Lunch Club. They ask when will be playing it in PE class? Our 5th Graders, have a 3 x 3 Floor Hockey Tournament each year. They choose their own teams,and design and make their own team t-shirts. This is our very own "March Madness". The school is filled with the excitement of school spirit. Sadly, with so much use the floor hockey equipment takes a beating and lasts only a few years. Once again this year, there have been sweeping budget cuts to all our programs. We are faced with not being able to replace the equipment.

To say our students love floor hockey is to put it mildly.

We really need your help and generosity to be able to replace our hockey sticks and pucks and keep our floor hockey program going and the thrill of our "March Madness" thriving for our 5th Graders.
