This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever received a gift that you didn't ask for but later realized it was something you never knew you always wanted? My students, like many teens, need the gift of reading materials. Although they don't know it yet, receiving these books will be the greatest boon of their lives.
I was fortunate to grow up in an area where the schools were of blue-ribbon quality and the resources were endless.
Unfortunately, my students do not have the experience or luxuries that I had growing up. My students attend a Title I school which means most (if not all) of the children require free transportation and lunch. Knowing what tools and resources are out there and being unable to provide my young teenagers with them is extremely frustrating. My kids, mostly second language learners, struggle to keep up with the ever-changing requirements and standards the state and the city have pushed upon them. This year I have two 8th grade ICT classes where many of the students read on a 3rd/4th grade level. I also have an advanced 7th grade class who are scratching for new reading material. As a result of the disparity between the reading levels of my students, it's important that I'm able to reach all of their needs to help them become better readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.
My Project
My students will always need new books that are fitting to their individual reading and interest levels. In addition to that, my students would benefit from a subscription to Scholastic Scope for a variety of reasons. When my students go home, most of them are immersed in Spanish speaking homes which leaves no room to practice their English. Scholastic Scope not only provides kids with reading strategies, the ability to think deeply and critically, and express their views on a plethora of topics, but it also exposes them to what is going on in the world. Even though my kids live in NYC, they are closed off to all of the events that are going on. Being able to use Scholastic Scope in the classroom will give my kids the opportunity to read about these events, talk about them, and gain a better understanding of the world and the people in it. A colleague of mine previous received a donation for Scholastic Scope and I borrowed them last year and my kids didn't want to give it back.
By receiving this donation, my students will be able to find books that meet their individual needs, learn about the world, develop better reading strategies authentically, and be able to have meaningful discussions that will hopefully stir up some controversy so that the entire class can participate and constructively argue their points.
Most of all, this will show my students that reading doesn't have to be "lame," "boring," or "a waste of their time," rather it can be fun and engaging.
