A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are a mixed group of students--some love school, some don't, some are learning English, others want to be the first in their family to graduate high school and college. I teach many students who have a desire to grow academically and culturally and who want to experience more of life, but their resources are limited. My school is a Title I school. I have always told my students that they should travel and explore their world and reading can broaden perspectives for students who cannot afford to travel.
What inspires me about my students is their curiosity.
They want to learn and succeed and sometimes the best learning occurs organically.
Recently, a group of my students expressed a desire to begin their own book club. All they need are copies of the books they want to read. They have a desire to read merited literature and grow socially as well by organizing a regularly meeting group modeled after book clubs that meet in book stores. Most of them are unable to travel and ride the bus to school, so they want to create a book club that meets at school.
My Project
Today in class 8 of my students asked me how to start a book club and asked me what they should read. They also asked me where they could get free books because all of them are served through free lunch and sometimes have trouble paying for extra activities. Their excitement in meeting together to be able to discuss what they read is what teachers dream about. This project will allow my students to take charge of their learning and become leaders in their own learning community. They have already begun planning and want to invite other students to join them. With support and resources, I see this activity inspiring them and giving them the confidence they will need to make reading a lifelong pursuit.
The best learning is organic and student initiated.
All we need to support their learning and feed a lifelong love of literature are the books they want to read.
