My Students

The ability to read and comprehend is one of the most important skills a student should possess. Did you realize that 85% of all the juveniles who become a part of the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate?

I teach English I-IV to students at all grade levels in a public school which is located within our county jail.

These students sign up for school while they are waiting for either their court date, sentencing, or bail. I have witnessed, countless times, this illiteracy, which is why I am asking for some high-interest class sets of books for my students to help them become better readers.

My Project

I have personally read all of the books that I am requesting. Three of them are related in the sense that they all take place in a dystopian world. The other books contain strong African American characters; many of my students are African American, and an African American male is 70% more likely to read a book if he sees a character that he can identify with in it. With the use of these books, my students will become more literate. I will teach them how to write about the characters in the books, and how to discuss and share with others what happens in the book. I will encourage them to recommend books they enjoyed to other students.

The ability to read, write, and think are essential skills in today's world.

The more practice my students get reading and writing the better they will be. Your donation to my class gives them an opportunity to take one more step on the bridge from illiteracy to literacy. Your donation also helps me create a classroom atmosphere of literacy where students are reading different books and talking about their experiences with one another. As their teacher, this is my goal.
