These Chemistry Students Matter

My students need a huge periodic table wall chart that was actually made in this century, and a set of element cards to help them learn the symbols.

My Students

What do you do with a sick chemistry student? Well, if you can't Helium, or Curium, you might as well Barium! How often do I tell chemistry jokes? Only periodically! I could really go on telling chemistry jokes, but I'm afraid all of the good ones Argon.

My students have big hearts and are willing to work hard for me in spite of my deplorable chemistry puns, because they know that I believe they can do it.

They come from hard working families and are part of a long tradition of learning in these halls since many of their parents and grandparents attended high school here in this very same building. It is the oldest school building still in use in our town. Much of the science lab equipment is as old as the school and hasn't been updated in decades.

My Project

My classroom needs an enormous periodic table that was printed in this century to hang on the wall. The one we currently have was printed over 40 years ago, and doesn't even have any of the new elements that have been discovered since then. The old one is faded, warped, and unreadable from the students' seats. Worse than that, it's ugly and gives off an aura that my students deserve nice things. I know that they deserve better. We would use a giant periodic table every single day in our chemistry classes. It would be an invaluable instructional tool that we could refer to for nearly every lesson from properties of matter, to atomic structure, electron configuration, elements, the Mole, and atomic bonding. If we needed more chemistry puns, it might help us Zinc of some more. This new chart would let us do all of that and more.

This project will help bring my classroom into the 21st century by updating one of the tools we will use the most.

It will help my students learn enduring science skills that they can use to solve real problems, and hopefully they will also learn that having mass and taking up space isn't the only reason that they matter.
