Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dear Donor, I currently teach a second and third grade bridge bilingual special education class in a high-need community school.

I would like to teach my class about reference skills - where to look up information when they need help or want to write something on their own, but recently I noticed that I cannot find a thesaurus around. My third grade students have been reading much more this year than in previous years, but some still struggle with their writing. They continue to write using the same words over and over again. "The girl is nice". "The story is nice". "My holiday break was nice". I try to get them to think in terms of other vocabulary. I would love to have a class set so that each individual student has his/her own reference book that they could refer to.

I also have some second grade students who are extremely low with respects to literacy. Right now, in the midst of preparing my third graders for their state reading exams, I also have the task of teaching my second graders their alphabet and letter sounds. This is why I am requesting the three sided reference cards and reference partition. These materials have the colors, numbers and letters as well as the words that go along with them, for example, 1-one, 2-two, 3-three.

Your generosity will allow this group of children to learn skills that they will use for the rest of their lives and help those who are behind in their academic work begin to catch up to the rest of the class.
