This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi, my name is Karen; I am a Special Education Elementary STEM Teacher. I teach students with autism and developmental delays. The students enjoy engaging in hands-on learning, learning about life science, and observing nature. My co-teacher and I have a Grow Lab and Hydroponic Growing System in our STEM classroom. Our students participate in planting and germinating seeds. As the seeds grow into seedling, students transfer them into the Hydroponic Growing System. Then we celebrate the bounty of our labor with a Harvest Day and make simple recipes with our students.

Currently, our STEM room has no windows and air circulation and reaches temperatures of 83 degrees in the winter!

In these sweltering temperatures, the students become unmotivated and distracted in the hot classroom. The students often need breaks, which interups the flow of classroom learning. The heat and lack of humidity also affect germination and plant growth. Based on our hydrometer, the humidity in the STEM room is 20%. Based on research, the ideal humidity range for most mature plants is 50% to 60%. When the plants wilt because of the heat and temperature, our students become disappointed and get discouraged. We are requesting 4 fans and 1 humidifier to help regulate the temperature in our STEM classroom. Ideal temperature and humidity makes for happy students and happy plants.
