Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is located in the East Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, New York and is a Title I school. A majority of our school population lives at or below the poverty standards set by the State of New York. The school has done an outstanding job of promoting academic excellence. It houses one of the highest performing public high schools in New York City, and in 2014 was voted as the tenth most challenging public high school in the United States by the Washington Post and New York Times.

For the past 15 years, the wrestling program at our high school has helped produce many successful people within our community.

Our student-athletes have received scholarships, and later on in their lives have become teachers, policemen, coaches and people our community can be proud of. In 2019, our team was awarded the Triple Crown status of winning all three major wrestling competitions in New York City. Our program values the importance of providing high quality academic and athletic opportunities for our students.

My Project

I am opening up this project to support our high school wrestling program.

This past season was a memorable one where we won the New York City PSAL Dual Meet City Championship, the Individual City Championship, and the Mayors Cup City Championships.

Due to State budget cuts, our school is no longer able to afford the cost associated with supporting the needs of our growing program. Our wrestling program provides life lessons on leadership, team building, SAT prep, study hall hours, goal achievement, and postsecondary planning for our young scholar-athletes. This year’s roster includes one individual city champion and four city finalists who are exceptional student-athletes and are in need of continued support and exposure to gain scholarship opportunities. We need help with fundraising and we greatly appreciate any financial help that you can provide. The donations collected will help our entire team rent a van to travel outside of NYC to compete with the best wrestlers in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
