I love the question "what makes your students special" knowing that EVERYTHING is not the best answer but it is most certainly true. My students are eager to learn and want to do their best daily. Their confidence is contagious and they make teaching the best job around.
I teach at a Title I school with diverse students from all walks of life.
Many of the students receive free/reduced lunch and also receive "backpack buddies" which provides them with food and snacks for the weekend. Despite the challenges they may face, my students come to school ready to do their very best.
My Project
Many people are lead to believe that picture books are just for younger students. This is not true. Picture books help students of all ages connect with the characters and the purpose of the story. I chose picture books that are aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning for upper grade students as well as books with diverse characters that will allow all students to connect with the characters in the story. The request for flexible seating in the classroom offers students to choose a seat that allows maximum attention to focus on the lesson and minimize distractions. My students need camping chairs, wobble cushions, bouncy bands, and books like "Boris Ate a Thesaurus" to enhance their knowledge of grade level content, boost their motivation to read independently, and maximize their comfortability in the classroom.
The donations for this project will improve their school lives by offering fun and engaging books that influence students to be readers and offering seating arrangements that allow students to be comfortable while learning.
I want to offer my students books that are engaging and that encourages them to LOVE to read. Some of my students struggle with basic seating arrangements and would be more successful in the classroom if other options were available.
Speaking with my students I found out they always search for the pictures in the story but sometimes picture books are "too easy". The picture books chosen for our classroom are challenging and age appropriate for the students. By providing my students with books with grade level content, diverse characters and pictures they will be excited about reading. Influencing students to love reading is the main goal of this project because there is NOTHING like a GOOD book and COMFY seat!
