Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a fifth grade teacher in a high needs school in Brooklyn, I have been able to teach the most amazingly dedicated and hardworking students and while I love what I do, I have to admit that for the past two years I have found myself a bit disenchanted. I feel that way because so much of what I must teach relates more to a state exam than to preparing my students for the future. There is so much more for them to know, wonder about, and invest in and for this I need your help. This year I want to expose my students to the world around them. I want my students to be informed. I want to talk to them about the world in a way that helps them to develop compassion. Moreover, I want to enable my students to discover who they are, not only as learners, but also as stakeholders in tomorrow's world. In order to do this is I must expose to them to the world. The most effective way to do this is through reading materials, specifically educational news magazines. Using quality educational news magazines that touch upon current events, world history as well as science and technology will enable my students to do some quick reading that exposes them to the real world around them. These magazines will also spark an interest and awaken a desire for them to do independent research and learn even more. The knowledge they gain through these materials will help lay the foundation for who they are to become in the future. As part of my educational plan, these magazines would be used once a week throughout the course of the school year, so that students can have on-going discussions about what they've read and what they are thinking. Please help my students see that “There’s A World Out There” by funding these weekly magazine subscriptions. Thank you in advance!
