My Students

I work in a public K-8 STEM school in 5th grade. I share 2 classes of kids that are amazing wonderers! Many of the kids have been with each other since the school opened 4 years ago and have formed great bonds with each other. They have a vast background in STEM education and I am constantly trying to find creative ways to grow their learning even further. They ask questions, find answers, and love being challenged!

Our campus values facilitating the kids' growth in being Persistent, Solution Focused, Service Minded, and Adaptable.

As 5th graders, we really work on building the skills to be successful in their middle school classes.

My Project

When you want to find out more about something where do you go or what do you do? In the digital age that we are in, we are used to the mind set of, "There's an App for that!" We find apps or websites that help us do what we need done in the quickest way possible, whether it be for entertainment, exploration, or information. As teachers we are always evolving to meet the needs of our students and keep learning fun and engaging. Sometimes, that means breaking away from technology and putting books in their hands again. So, this project, "There's a BOOK for that!" meets the needs and philosophy of my classroom. One of my favorite ways to introduce kids to science topics is by reading picture books to them. I have always loved integrating reading in my science and engineering classroom, but now I will also be teaching reading officially and these books will help maximize our time together.

This is the ULTIMATE 5th grade picture book list for science!

Each book on this list matches a TEK (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill) in our 5th grade curriculum. If you help my students get these books in their hands, we will have at least 1 book (and up to 10!) to read with every unit. With exposure to books in my classroom, students will explore meaning of science processes and skills, but also the craft of writing and reading multiple genres. This will truly help become cross-curricular all in one room!
