My Students

Science and Math are fascinating subjects, but kids need to see the real thing! In my classroom, middle school students get to see STEM in action with intriguing, challenging, hands-on projects. Students are given opportunities to build, test, analyze and experiment.

Imagine being able to build a captivating, unique instrument that seemingly creates music out of thin air.

With your help, my 7th-grade math students will be achieving just that, while learning about circuitry, precision engineering, and teamwork by building a theremin! My NYC students come from low-income homes and arrive at school looking to better themselves through visualizing, enacting, and accomplishing their dreams. In developing a love of math and creativity, they are bound to succeed! My students love music and technology! With these interests I aim to grow their love of the beautiful worlds of mathematics, technology, and engineering. A theremin building kit is a small part of a larger dream project that will have students seeing MATH as a functional language through which they can express their imagination. With this kit and amplifier, my students will build an invention created by Leon Theremin, a pioneer of technological innovation.

My Project

The theremin, if you haven't heard of one, is an absolutely mystifying creation that allows the player to create music without any physical contact with the instrument. This amazing device is a kinesthetic learner's dream! It really is amazing that a kit such as this one exists. If it weren't for Robert Moog, a NYC electronics innovator, and his father passionately building these kits, we wouldn't have an this opportunity. Please help us experience the wonder and awe of the technology and invention that Robert Moog helped pioneer by giving the gift of craftsmanship, musicianship, and electrical engineering skill-building to my students by providing them with a theremin building kit and amplifier. My students learn through many, many modalities; some being visual, musical, and tactile learners. When this project is brought to life, my students will be able to grasp concepts of electrical engineering, technology, and invention--all in a seventh-grade math classroom!

This project will make an enormous difference by giving my students a unique opportunity to explore a realm of innovation and technology that few adults get to experience.

Through this project, I will be able to share with students my love for building, creating, and problem solving, while cultivating in them a love for STEM that will benefit them throughout their educational careers.
